When I think of an accomplished Astronomer through the 20th century, the first person to come to mind is Edwin Powell Hubble. He had numerous achievements inside the study of Astronomy ahead of his loss of life in 1953. Among all those was his discovery of galaxies beyond the Milky Way, the expanding world, and managing the construction from the Hale Telescope. Because of his major advantages to the analyze of Astronomy, the Hubble Space Telescope was named after him in 1990.
Certainly one of Hubble's initially discoveries is that there are various other Galaxies outside our Galaxy, the Milky Way. In the 1920s, the small, diffuse areas in the sky were termed nebulae, and had been thought to exist within the Milky Way. Whilst examining pictures of the galaxies, NGC 6822, M33, and M31, Hubble noticed a pulsating legend known as a Cepheid variable inside each one particular. Cepheids are special since their pulsation allows for precise measurements of distance. Hubble calculated how long away each Cepheid lay down — and thus how far to each nebula — and understood they were too distant to be inside of the Milky Way. Astronomers realized that these types of nebulae had been in fact galaxies like the Milky Way, every single containing vast amounts of stars. The universe, once thought to be contained by the Milky Way, extended significantly in the eyes of astronomers (Space. com, 2012). This was a fantastic discovery in Astronomy and led to Hubble publishing a classification program for these galaxies. Hubble published a standard category system to work with for the galaxies. At that time, a detailed system existed, and two other systems had been proposed shortly after, but they were insufficient (Space. com, 2012). Hubble's classification system had galaxies fixed by articles, distance, form, and illumination. Hubble's clear method of managing the various classes focuses on 3 galactic types: ellipticals, spiral and banned spirals, and irregulars. Well-known...
